Filming and photographing in the Library

As an RMIT staff or current student, you can take photographs or short videos for personal use or class assignments. You can use a mobile phone, tablet, or laptop camera and without formal authorization, provided staff and other users are not inconvenienced nor recognizable.

You will need permission to film or take photographs in the Library if:

  • You need additional equipment (such as tripod, lighting, camera, sound equipment, etc.)
  • You are RMIT Alumni
  • You are external to RMIT University
  • It is for commercial purposes
  • It is conducted by news media
  • It is for wider distribution
  • You will film or photograph recognisable faces
  • It requires a crew of more than 2 people (including the filmmaker)
  • It requires moving of any furniture.

Approval may take up to two business days.

These conditions apply to all Library sites:

  • Filming or photographing must occur during opening hours
  • It must not inconvenience Library users
  • Real or imitation weapons must not be used
  • There is no simulated violence involved in the activity
  • There is no loud shouting or other loud noises that would disturb library uses
  • There is no offensive language
  • The activity will comply with RMIT Privacy Policy
  • You must ensure you have consent from those being filmed this includes External parties, RMIT staff and students. Please use the RMIT Filming consent form.
Library staff have the right to terminate activity at any time if the filming/photography activity breaches any of the above.

Community visitors are welcome

Our Library is open to community visitors and researchers. Membership is not required to access physical collections, free online resources and open study spaces. There are also options for those wishing to borrow from our collections.
