Frequently asked questions

FAQs for our language programs.

Which languages are offered at RMIT?

As a major in the Bachelor of International Studies (Languages): Chinese, French, Japanese and Spanish.

As electives in any RMIT program: Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

Can I study a language at RMIT as part of my Undergraduate (or Postgraduate) degree?

Languages are offered as a major in the Bachelor of International Studies (Languages) and to all RMIT students as an elective. Your program structure informs how many electives you can choose.

If I have studied languages at school and/or in other ways, how does it work with my language elective choice?

You will be assessed and placed at the appropriate level for you to continue language studies. Please contact the language coordinator for advice.

I have studied a language up to VCE Year 12, can I continue studying at RMIT?

Yes, if the language is available. Students who have completed language study at VCE should contact the language coordinator for advice.

What do I do if RMIT does not offer a language I want to study or at the levels I want to continue?

RMIT has cross-institutional arrangements with other universities. RMIT students can study languages which are not offered at RMIT, at other universities, and obtain equivalent credit points to their RMIT degree. You will need to gain approval for this from your RMIT program manager. To find out which other universities offer the language you are looking for, please see University Languages Portal Australia.

What if I am studying at another university which doesn’t offer the language I want?

With approval from your home university, you can attend RMIT as a cross institutional student to study the language of your choice. Your result at RMIT will then be credited to your degree at your home university. Your government funded place, or your loan, will apply to your studies at RMIT for that course/s only. Cross-institutional students receive an RMIT student number and have access to all RMIT facilities and resources for their studies.

Can I study overseas?

You can undertake a variety of overseas study experience depending on the structure of your program, including exchange, study tours, work-based programs and other short-term programs.
