Overview

Whether you're passionate about primary, secondary, or early childhood education, this course equips you with the tools to make a meaningful difference in young lives.

The Bachelor of Education offers a perfect blend of the latest educational theories with practical, hands-on experience, providing you with a strong foundation to excel in the challenging, yet rewarding, world of teaching.

At RMIT, you get to decide what kind of teacher you’d like to be, with a choice from:

Bachelor of Education (Primary)

Prepare yourself for a career as a specialist primary teacher and gain globally transferrable skills and knowledge.

Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education)

Be equipped to foster the developmental milestones of children from birth to age 12.

Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary)

Extend your teaching capabilities to classes from Year 7 through to VCE, with a focus on subject-specific secondary teaching.

Whichever path you choose, you'll gain invaluable classroom experience through professional placements in a range of settings, learning to create engaging and inclusive learning environments that cater to diverse student needs.

You'll develop the skills and confidence to inspire and motivate students of all ages, all while discovering your unique teaching style.

By the time you graduate, you'll be well-prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow's classrooms as a specialist primary teacher, or a primary education generalist and specialist in either early childhood education or secondary teaching.

Why choose education at RMIT?

Expert academics

Learn in small classes from recognised leaders in primary education across all disciplines.

Hands-on experience

Undertake at least 80 or 120 days of supervised professional experience, with opportunities to train in a range of settings.

Fully accredited

Accredited* by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). The Primary and Early Childhood stream is also accredited by the ACECQA.

*The Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary) is not yet accredited with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).

Choose your specialisation

RMIT's Bachelor of Education allows you to focus just on primary teaching, or you can branch out into early childhood education or secondary teaching as well.

Bachelor of Education (Primary)

This stream prepares you for a career as a specialist primary teacher, equipping you with the globally transferable skills and knowledge needed to inspire young learners in their foundational years. You'll choose one from two main areas of focus as well as a minor in a specific discipline area.

Throughout your study, you will complete a minimum of 80 days' supervised placement in schools and other educational settings.

Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education)

This stream is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to foster the developmental milestones of children from birth to age 12. You'll be trained to create nurturing and stimulating environments that support children's growth and learning.

Throughout your study, you will complete a minimum of 120 days' supervised placement in a diverse range of settings, including school environments, birth-to-35-month contexts, and before-school (3 to 5 years) settings.

Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary)

Not only does this stream give you a broad knowledge of learning, teaching, curriculum and assessment as a primary generalist, it also provides specialised focus on subject-specific secondary teaching. You'll extend your teaching capabilities to classes from Year 7 through to VCE, with in-depth knowledge and expertise in your chosen area, whether it be biology, English, mathematics, physical education, or psychology.

Throughout your study, you will complete a minimum of 80 days' supervised placement in schools and other educational settings.

Details

Learning and teaching

When you study with us, you learn from academic staff who are recognised leaders in the fields of primary education across all disciplines.

Our course intake is kept small to ensure your teachers can provide you with a personalised learning experience based on your unique needs and interests. You will experience a variety of contemporary and interactive teaching and learning approaches, including interactive workshops, seminars and school-based experiences, as well as engaging in reflective-practice techniques. All your classes are designed with a focus on small group-based learning environments and workshops, giving you hands-on and inclusive experience from day one.

Courses in this degree are offered on-campus during the day through the two semester teaching periods, with some options for flexible and intensive subjects offered in spring and summer semesters.

Assessment methods

To be a lifelong learner, you must be able to evaluate your own practice. Your teachers will provide feedback related to how you engage with curriculum, learners and colleagues as a pre-service school teacher so you will graduate classroom-ready.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

This degree has been designed to provide a minimum of 80 days of supervised professional experience, so you graduate with real-world experience.

There is an additional 40 days (minimum) of supervised placement in early childhood settings for the Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education).

We encourage you to experience education in a range of settings, and offer opportunities for placements in different cultures and countries. As part of your studies, you will complete a placement in a disability setting, giving you a range of strategies for managing challenging behaviours.

RMIT has strong relationships with many partner schools, communities and enterprises, which assists our students in finding professional placements. Placements in third year may be undertaken in different locations, such as rural or interstate settings.

Through these placements, you will learn and develop your own teacher identity, allowing you to adapt to the dynamics of different learning environments and student groups. These experiences involve problem-based learning and reflection on your practice as you receive feedback from mentors.

Teaching is a globally transferable qualification that will always be in demand.

Global work, exchange and study experiences

RMIT offers a range of opportunities for our students to study abroad through global work, exchange and study experiences with over 165 partner universities worldwide.

There are also opportunities for students to complete alternative professional placements in a range of international settings, or in remote Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Education and registration with VIT, graduates are entitled to apply to the Australasian Teacher Regulatory Authorities (ATRA) to register as a teacher nationally and overseas.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this degree and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes for each stream:

Bachelor of Education (Primary)

In the Primary stream, you'll choose one area of focus:

  • Health and Physical Education
  • Generalist Primary Education—in this option, you will also choose one of the following areas, in which you will develop skills and expertise as a curriculum leader:
    • Literacy
    • Numeracy
    • STEM education

You'll then complement your chosen area of focus with one minor from the following:

  • Health and Physical Education
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Student Wellbeing
  • Inclusive Education
  • Working multi-lingually
  • The Arts for Education
  • STEM for Education

Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education)

In this stream, you'll cover many of the same core subjects as the Primary stream, but you'll also undertake some subjects specific to early childhood learning and development, such as language development and literacy in the early years, the role of play in early childhood curriculum, the importance of partnership with parents and community to achieve best practice for children in early childhood education and care contexts, and more.

You'll also complete a minimum of 120 days of supervised professional practice across early childhood and primary settings.

Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary)

Upon enrolling in this stream, you will select and complete a series of subjects in one of the following five major teaching areas (6 subjects across 4 years), which will allow you to teach the curriculum to a range of classes from Year 7 through to VCE:

  • biology
  • English
  • mathematics
  • physical education
  • psychology

If you wish to select mathematics as your teaching area of focus, it is strongly recommended that you have completed VCE Mathematics (Methods) at a Year 12 level.

In Year Four, you have the option of taking up a sports coaching internship—you will complete a minimum of 36 hours in a relevant sporting organisation or exercise setting (e.g., school, community, fitness, health, professional, or corporate).

Additional information

If you are successful in obtaining a place in this program, you must meet a number of professional compliance requirements upon commencement of your studies.

Working With Children Check*

Applicants will be required to hold a valid Victorian Working with Children (WWC) Check (valid for 5 years) prior to undertaking professional placement as part of this program.

Note: For placements undertaken interstate a valid WWC Check is required for that state.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students*

The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) is a national test required by the Federal Government that all pre-service teachers must complete to be able to graduate and register as a teacher. The test is administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). You are able to sit the test up to three times before you need to seek further approval to complete a fourth or fifth (final) attempt. Please note that you are required to be physically in Australia to undertake this test at a test centre. Counselling and support for those failing the test will be available.

You are able to sit the LANTITE before you enrol in your degree. This will provide you with the result early. If you are not successful on your first attempt, this will enable you and your lecturers to identify the areas you need to focus on in your studies. You must attempt the LANTITE by the end of your first year of your studies, and must pass the test by the end of your second year to progress to third year.

Please visit the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education website for more information, including the cost of the test.

Vaccination*

For the Primary and Early Childhood Education stream, some child care centres may require you to provide evidence of vaccination prior to undertaking professional experience.

*All relevant screening and compliance check fees are the responsibility of the student.

You must attempt your LANTITE by the end of your first year of your studies, and must pass the test by the end of your second year to progress to third year.

Pathways

Understanding pathways

Undertaking a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree can help you meet the entry requirements for your preferred course. These qualifications often provide credit, reducing the duration of your bachelor degree.

This course offers pathway options. If you don’t meet the entry requirements, a formal pathway might be your way in.

Credit, recognition of prior learning, professional experience and accreditation from a professional body can reduce the duration of your study by acknowledging your earlier, relevant experience.

Credit and exemptions will be assessed consistent with the principles of the RMIT Credit Policy.

When you successfully complete this degree, you may be eligible for entry into an RMIT Honours or Postgraduate degree.

You can gain entry to this degree from RMIT Foundation Studies or a range of vocational study programs.

Credit may reduce the duration of your study by acknowledging your earlier, relevant study experience.

When you are submitting an application, please indicate that you want to be considered for credit and provide detailed course syllabus (also known as course outline), outlining volume of learning, course content and weekly topics, learning objectives/outcomes, assessment types and their weightings, and reference to the learning resources such as prescribed textbooks and recommended readings.

When you successfully complete this program, you may be eligible for entry into an RMIT Honours or Postgraduate degree.

Paying your fees and applying for refunds

For information on how to pay your fees or how to apply for a refund, please see Paying your fees and applying for refunds.

If you are offered a Commonwealth supported place, your tuition fees are subsidised by the Australian Government.

Your share of the fee (student contribution) is set on an annual basis by the government and is determined by the discipline areas (bands) of your individual enrolled courses, not the overall program.

How much can I expect to pay for my Commonwealth supported place?

The Australian Government has introduced changes to university funding and student contribution fees under its Job-ready Graduates Package

The fees in the table below apply to students who commence their program in 2025. Fees for continuing students are available at fees for Commonwealth supported students.

Each course (subject) falls into a band. The band determines the student contribution amount for the course.

Amounts listed in the table below are based on a standard, full-time study load (96 credit points per year) with all courses in the same band. A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load or for enrolment in courses (subjects) from a combination of bands.

You can learn how to calculate your exact tuition fees for units from different bands at Fees for Commonwealth supported students.

Student Learning Entitlement

On 1 January 2022, the Government implemented the Student Learning Entitlement (SLE).

  • The SLE allows students 7 years of full-time subsidised study in Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP).
  • Your total SLE amount will be reduced in accordance with your overall study load in a CSP.
  • Once you have utilised all your SLE, you can not longer study in a CSP.

For more information about SLE, visit Study Assist.

HECS-HELP Loans

The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the HECS-HELP loan scheme, which allows eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) to defer payment of up to the full amount of their student contribution.

SA-HELP Loans

You may be eligible to apply to defer payment of the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) through the SA-HELP loan scheme. If you use SA-HELP, the amount will be added to your accumulated HELP debt.

How does a HELP loan work?

If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulated HELP debt.

You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.

For more information about loan repayment options see Commonwealth assistance (HELP loans) or Study Assist.

Student services and amenities fee (SSAF)

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2025 is $365.
