Common first year

Not sure what interest you want to pursue? RMIT’s common first year gives you a chance to explore a mix of the fields that interest you. You can then make a more informed choice of what to study for the rest of your degree, without extending your overall degree length.

For example, if you’re interested in Science but aren’t sure which area you wanted to focus on out of Chemistry and Mathematics, there’s now flexibility to study both, or delay your choice of major until your second year. This gives you the freedom and flexibility to study what you want, even if you change your mind.

RMIT’s new Bachelor of Cyber Security is a great option for those looking for flexible and transferable tech skills that are in-demand across the job market.

Get the specialist knowledge to design, support and innovate cyber security solutions to create a safer digital future. Thanks to RMIT’s commitment to practical study, you’ll be learning these skills through a hands-on approach that’ll leave you feeling ready for what’s next.

Future Technology Skills courses

Not only are RMIT’s STEM courses designed with practical learning in mind, but they also prepare you for the future of work.

Future Technology Skills courses are embedded in all our STEM degrees. These tech-focused courses will give you a grounding in the innovative tech of tomorrow, better preparing you for what’s next in your future industry.

Alongside these courses, RMIT also has digital study opportunities, like virtual labs equipped with augmented reality and VR that will give you the full sci-fi study experience – all while you gain the expertise to land your dream career.

Bootcamp2Studio model

Our Information Technology programs use an innovative learning model called Bootcamp2Studio. This model allows you to gain the skills in a classroom environment before switching gears and getting the opportunity to apply them in real-world scenarios. The model is a great way to do a bit of independent self-testing without the need for flashcards or exams.

These boot camps involve a focused intensive period at the start of a subject that gives you a solid foundation of theory. This allows you to then transition your learning into a studio session, where you’ll apply these skills by solving a problem creatively alongside other students. There’s no better way to get a handle on the technical basics of your course!

You can find out more about the Bootcamp2Studio model by reading about the first year of Information Technology courses at RMIT.

New majors and minors

Majors and minors are specialisations that you choose as part of your study, they allow you to cater your degree to the things that you’re interested in most! Depending on what majors and minors you choose, your degree could lead to all kinds of different career outcomes.

Studying an RMIT STEM course means having the agency and the opportunities you need to branch into the career of your choice.

Not only do we offer next-gen study options, but many of our STEM courses have diverse majors and minors that allow you to better cater your degree to your passions.

In addition to these expanded choices, you also have the option to:

  • Choose a double major in Science and Computing courses that will allow you to specialise in two areas of study and graduate with a competitive edge without extending your degree length.
  • Select cross-disciplinary minors that complement your personalised study journey. Imagine combining your interest in Space Science with your Environmental Science program. You can even switch to a new major if you find your first choice doesn’t suit.

In recent years new majors and minors have been added across Science, Health, Information Technology, Engineering, Psychology and Aviation,  as well as a few new study options such as the Bachelor of Cyber Security, and a four-year option for both the Bachelor of Computer Science and the Bachelor of Data Science

No matter which degree you pursue, our STEM courses will spark your inspiration and give you control over your study journey as you prepare for what’s next.
