The RMIT Trading Facility (RTF)

The RMIT Trading Facility (RTF) is our market-leading financial trading simulation space. Amongst the largest tertiary-based facility of its type in Australia, the facility replicates a large bank or corporate treasury centre, with capacity to seat up to 60 participants at 20 dealer’s desks.

The RTF uses live market information from Refinitiv Eikon (a subsidiary of London Stock Exchange) including price and other trade data, news analysis and market research. Providing information on bonds, bills, foreign exchange, share prices, futures, forwards, swaps, options, current local and international market news.

Our courses use this market data in real-time trading simulations and technical workshops for multi-asset portfolio and risk analysis, hedging, money market and foreign exchange instruments trading. This innovative approach to education and training is part of RMIT Business’s commitment to providing graduates with real-world skills.

The facility and its commercial software tools are used by both undergraduate and postgraduate students in simulation-style teaching and practical market modelling. During the semester, the room can typically be used for up to 45 hours a week. When not in use for teaching, the RTF is available as a research resource for students enrolled in relevant courses.

Finance is the main course that accesses the RTF. As most of our students are looking forward to careers in banking, stockbroking and treasury and risk management, they can take full advantage of this realistic and hands-on work environment. Students are able to apply theory to the simulated trading space, consolidating their knowledge without real financial risks.

Students develop a passion for financial markets and a rich skill-base, readying them for the real industry. Many past students who have trained in this facility have since carved out successful careers in finance in Australia, Asia, London and New York.

What happens in the facility?

Participants can be trained in all aspects of financial markets settlements, auditing, foreign exchange, money market, risk management, dealing techniques, and market language and conventions. All participants learn to manage their own banking transactions, and are responsible for correcting errors or omissions, creating a full audit trail of the process.

In a supervised environment, a variety of skills can be developed including:

  • Application of market theory to practice
  • Rapid decision making under pressure
  • Complex problem solving skills
  • Conflict resolution
  • Specialised computer skills
  • Teamwork and communication skills
