Advanced Materials, Manufacturing and Fabrication Platform

Advanced materials, manufacturing and fabrication are driving the next wave of innovation and research translation in Australia through the transformation of specialised materials into high-performance products and solutions.

Our priority is to work across the innovation ecosystem, from designing novel materials, system digitisation, all the way through to their implementation into prototypes and products. Increased and accelerated impact generation can be enabled by digitisation of processes across the value-chain such as Industry 4.0 to address complex challenges. Integration of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence paradigms into these approaches is a key opportunity.

Advanced materials are diverse in form and function – key areas of interest include Nanomaterials, Quantum materials, Metamaterials, Functional and Stimuli-responsive materials. Incorporation of these materials and systems into processes, devices and other real-world solutions will continue to support innovation.

The capability of the Advanced Materials, Manufacturing and Fabrication Platform is ideally placed to contribute to the sovereign needs outlined in the National Manufacturing Priorities and The Action Plan for Critical Technologies. We seek to address inter-disciplinary challenges across sectors and provide innovation that spans disciplines.

Research and innovation priorities

The Advanced Materials, Manufacturing and Fabrication Platform works across the National Manufacturing Priority domains with researchers and partners.

The outputs and outcomes are focused on: Enabling the rapid transition of fundamental research to minimal viable products such as prototypes and devices.

  • Developing digitised products, digital twins and interfaces between the cyber and physical.
  • Platform technologies across length scales and sectors to create sustainable innovation.
  • Capturing value through multidisciplinary approaches from the design stage to the solution implementation.
  • Deploying Machine Learning, Modelling, Neural Networks, Artificial Intelligence in material discovery, process optimisation, system development or operation.

Capability mapping

At RMIT, capability mapping is an essential process that involves systematically identifying and evaluating the skills, knowledge, and resources within our institution, allowing us to strategically align our capabilities with our long-term goals and objectives.
