Course Description

You will gain a knowledge of structural, constructional, environmental, and servicing requirements for buildings, particularly in relation to environmental sustainability. You will understand the associated materiality of these requirements as they are translated into building form. You will devleop a technological information base and understanding of the architectural design implications of these technologies.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Apply design knowledge to solve a range of architectural problems in diverse contexts
  • Critically analyse, evaluate and make informed judgment on a wide range of architectural problems and situations
  • Integrate a body of practical and theoretical knowledge into your design process
  • Communicate complex design ideas through verbal, visual and written media
  • Develop an awareness mof environmental factors affecting the built environment


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Critically analyse and evaluate buildings as systems interacting with an environment, and consuming energy.
  • Integrate a range of principles addressing issues of sustainability in servicing and materials in buildings into your design process .
  • Develop complex architectural and technological design solutions to problems of environmentally sustainable servicing and materials in buildings.
  • Communicate your reasearch, analysis, and design solutions through written, verbal and visual media


Overview of Learning Activities

The range of student learning experiences will typically include the following:

  • Lecture series involving both in-house as well as practicing professionals from architecture and the associated consultative professions. This series will expose you not only to the relative technical principles but also to the application of these principles.
  • Studio type sessions where you will review and present the progress of your research project.

Other likely learning activities include:

  • Research into exemplar buildings.
  • Exposure to specific industry standard evaluation software and other graphic programs to aid representations of final research outcomes.
  • Production of design drawings demonstrating an understanding of the effects of sustainability on architecture.
