Course Description

Painting is an elective subject in the Bachelor of Art (Fine Art) Degree. It is designed to give students an elementary understanding of the concepts and materials used in the production of paintings. Students will be encouraged to experiment with and respond to materials; develop an awareness of visual perception and intuitive sensibilities; and see painting as a self-reflexive ongoing practice, which links into their major area of study. The student will achieve this by making paintings using various media and supports. Advanced projects are negotiated with students with a greater experience in the subject. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The student is to take part in the investigation of a number of painting processes which will broaden the student’s understanding of materials and concepts inherent in painting. The student will extend their knowledge and investigate the making of pictorial form through the use of: painting supports, preparation of grounds, oil and water-based painting media, colour mixing, colour theory, compositional and spatial considerations. 


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. investigate of a number of painting processes which will broaden your understanding of materials and concepts inherent in painting 
  2. extend your knowledge and investigate the making of pictorial form 
  3. extend your knowledge of painting as a self-reflexive ongoing practice and conduct visual research 
  4. participate in group tutorials and student presentations 
  5. produce a visual diary, participate in student presentations and draft Work Integrated Learning reflection and analysis 
  6. experiment with and respond to various materials and processes 
         


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.  

Learning Activities: 

  • Studio-based learning via projects and instruction sessions. 
  • Individual consultation with lecturer involving appraisal and feedback on projects and self-directed programs where appropriate 
  • Individual visual research 
  • Group tutorials and student presentation

Assessment Tasks 

  • Assessment Task 1. Folio and Presentation of resolved works 50% CLO 1,2,3,6 
  • Assessment Task 2. Research journal, documentation, and support materials 40% CLO 1,2,3,6 
  • Feedback Reflections 10% CLO 4,5
