Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Required Prior Study
You should have satisfactorily completed following course/s before you commence this course.
- CHEM1313 Chemistry Fundamentals 1 (Course ID 055176)
- CHEM1314 Chemistry Fundamentals 2 (Course ID 055177)
- CHEM1039 Concepts in Chemistry (Course ID 003534)
Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.
Contact your course coordinator if you think you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning.
Course Description
This course builds on your basic knowledge of chemistry gained in first and early second year University-level Chemistry.
The course extends and deepens fundamental principles and chemical language, as well introduce many important new concepts in Inorganic, Organic, Physical and Nuclear Chemistry.
The course Further Concepts in Chemistry aims to enable you to develop an advanced level of critical thinking and problem solving in Inorganic, Organic, Physical and Nuclear chemistry. These skills are required of professional scientists in solving structural, energetic and kinetic problems associated with chemical, biological and physical processes.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the program learning outcomes for the following program(s):
BP350 - Bachelor of Science (Chemistry Major)
PLO 1 Analyse and apply principles of scientific inquiry and critical evaluation to address real-world scientific challenges and inform evidence based decision making.
The course may also contribute to additional programs.
For more information on the program learning outcomes for your program, please see the program guide.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge and understanding of inorganic, organic, physical and nuclear chemistry principles;
- Gather, synthesize and critically evaluate information from a range of sources;
- Collect, record, interpret and draw conclusions from scientific data;
- Communicate results, information or arguments in fundamental chemistry theory effectively in writing;
- Demonstrate that you are independent and self-directed learner
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course.
There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.
