Course Description
In this course you will gain the foundation knowledge for corporate strategic planning for enterprises and organisations that have a significant engineering and technology base. You will develop strategies enabling your engineering organisation to compete in the national and global marketplace. You will investigate market mechanisms and national and international economies in which modern industrial enterprises operate and the impacts that they have on individual firms competing in national and global markets. You will also examine the effective integration of economic and corporate aspects of strategic planning and policy influence and study cases which are especially relevant to engineering and technology based enterprises and organisations.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes:
1. Needs, Context and Systems
- Describe, investigate and analyse complex engineering systems and associated issues (using systems thinking and modelling techniques)
- Exposit legal, social, economic, ethical and environmental interests, values, requirements and expectations of key stakeholders
2. Problem Solving and Design
- Develop creative and innovative solutions to engineering problems
4. Professional Practice
- Demonstrate effective team membership and team leadership
5. Research
- Be aware of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Analyse a technology-based organisation or enterprise company in terms of its internal and external economic environment and associated processes.
- Analyse factors that influence national and international economic policy and development and assess their impact on an individual firm.
- Develop strategies that relate various marketplace mechanisms and economic systems to the successful operations of industrial organisations, which are appropriate for the organisation and the markets and economies in which they operate.
- Prepare sound arguments to improve national and international policies of research and development in the strategic interest of an engineering and technology-based enterprise or organisation and consider the impact of Artificial Intelligence and advanced data analytics on the decision-making process.
Overview of Learning Activities
A detailed study guide is provided to assist learning and provide insights into key concepts. It provides detailed references to the prescribed text.
Overview of Learning Resources
Learning activities throughout the course include: Pre-recorded lecture videos, tutorials, presentations, group discussions, project work and case studies and online and face to face learing.
The course is structured around your development of a complex Case Study, which is a research-oriented activity requiring rigorous analysis of a technology-based organisation or enterprise.
In the project work, as a ’supervised’ research related activity, you are encouraged to meet regularly with the class lecturer for supervision meetings throughout the semester, either individually or in small groups.
The series of lecture/tutorials and associated study notes address and highlight a range of identified key issues associated with identifying the internal and external economic environment of organisations with a particular emphasis on the role of strategic management in engineering and technology-based enterprises.
In addition, you will also need to maintain a rigorous reading schedule of the recommended readings, as well as actively exploring other areas of current information about the key topics.
The assessment case-study activity is a Work Integrated Learning activity that provides you a significant opportunity for active study and application of relevant theory and practice through development of a real-world case-study on an actual technology-based company or organisation. You are encouraged to select and engage in direct consultation with a technology-based company or organisation of your own choice for the purpose of developing your Case Study.
Overview of Assessment
This course has no hurdle requirements.
