To be eligible for enrolment in this course you need to have knowledge and experience pertinent to the profession and practice of nursing and/or midwifery.

Course Description

This course provides you with an opportunity to continue to develop your research abilities congruent with those demonstrated by nurses and midwives working either as advanced clinicians, managers, or educators in the health care sector. You are also encouraged to engage in and contribute to the development of research/evidence-based nursing and midwifery practice. The course will also provide you with an opportunity to continually develop and transform practice through the processes of research, critical evaluation and reflection.

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

1. Critically review the relationship between research, evidence-based nursing practice and patient safety outcomes
2. Explore the social, political and professional influences on nursing research in a variety of health care domains
3. Critically analyse available research literature to explore and inform “real world” nursing problems.
4. Identify the ethical and legal responsibilities of undertaking nursing research in a variety of settings, and apply knowledge of the National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NH&MRC) standards of ethical human research to nursing research practice.

Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities for this course include a mixture of lectures, class discussion (via collaborate ultra) and self-directed learning exercises including directed reading of academic literature. You will also be expected to participate in experiential exercises such as role plays and contribute to discussions to enable you to develop a solid theoretical basis to help you to achieve professional practice.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
