Course Description
This course will prepare students for working in social work (and multi-disciplinary) teams to develop and manage responsive, supportive and effective programs upon graduation. Students will use design thinking to develop a program idea that addresses a specific need. This intensive course will run over three days in Semester 1. The course will be staffed by people with experience in social work and service design, to support students to develop their ideas.
The focus of this course is on assisting students to use their social work skills, knowledge and experience to develop a credible program idea. Students will be encouraged to see themselves as social workers developing a social work program, using design thinking.
The use of design thinking is intended to introduce students to a method for developing innovative, creative programs, which is becoming increasingly prevalent in human services organisations. This course is run intensively to help students develop ideas and thinking within concentrated class times. Days are spaced throughout the semester to allow students time to absorb ideas, and to develop assessments between workshops.
Please note that if you take this course for a Bachelor Honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. (This applies to students who commence enrolment in a bachelor honours program from 1 January 2016 onwards. See the WAM information web page for more information.)
