Assumed Knowledge
To be eligible to enrol in this course you must have successfully completed a Bachelor of Nursing degree or equivalent, and a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery or Bachelor of Midwifery degree or equivalent. You must also hold a current registration with AHPRA as both a Nurse and a Midwife, have completed a minimum of one year post registration clinical experience in each of nursing and midwifery, and demonstrate recent clinical experience, defined as having worked in nursing or midwifery for a minimum of one year in the past five years.
Course Description
Child and Family Health Assessment is designed to provide you with foundational theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to support your entry into supervised Maternal and Child Health (MCH) clinical experience in community settings. This course is delivered predominantly online and builds on and enhances knowledge and practical skills gained during previous professional nursing and midwifery practice. The course is a prerequisite for NURS1019 Child and Family Nursing in the Community and NURS2183 Maternal and Child Health Clinical Placement.
Child and Family Health Assessment is focused on three central areas of practice:
- Engaging with families and working together to promote child health and family wellbeing,
- Assessment and intervention for child health and developmental issues, and
- Assessment of maternal and family wellbeing including support and referral for early parenting concerns.
Child and Family Health Assessment will introduce you to physical and developmental assessment skills and the associated range of validated screening tools (including those used for primary and secondary developmental screening).

At any time prior to or during your placement if there are concerns raised related to your fitness to practice the Program Manager can request that you gain full medical clearance to continue your placement.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the development of the Program Learning Outcomes for GD159 Graduate Diploma in Child and Family Health Nursing in the following way:
- PLO 4: Apply evidence-based knowledge to conceptualise and deliver the safe and effective practice in a variety of contexts, independently and collaboratively, with emerging technological advancements.
- PLO 5: Demonstrate the ability to generate and evaluate solutions to all aspects of interdisciplinary professional practice while complying with ethical, legal and regulatory standards.
On successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Critically analyse issues impacting on maternal, child and family health and apply observation and communication skills to explore and assess these.
- Demonstrate an ability to conduct physical assessment on infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers, using techniques that appropriately reflect a child’s developmental stage, cognitive level, cultural background, and purpose of the assessment.
- Perform advanced assessments of infant/child development and maternal and family wellbeing utilising validated screening tools and critically interpreting the findings.
- Work in partnership with families to clarify needs and promote child health and family wellbeing.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, self-directed learning modules on Canvas, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery is predominantly online with clinical skills sessions on campus.
This course involves Work Integrated Learning experiences such as Clinical Workshops on Campus on Early Intervention.
RMIT have state of the art simulated learning facilities for student learning and practice. You will participate in simulated practice within these facilities in preparation for placement. As a part of participation you may be filmed for learning, teaching, reflection and assessment and this is considered an inherent part of our learning and teaching program. Recordings will be maintained in accordance with our assessment, document retention and privacy policies.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.

Overview of Assessment
This course contains hurdle requirements. All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching).
Hurdles are necessary to demonstrate to the accrediting body that students are competent and have been sufficiently assessed using practice-focused professional standards.
