Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.
Contact your course coordinator if you think you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning.
Course Description
This course will build on the knowledge and skills you have learned in NURS2100 Medical and Surgical Nursing 1. In this course you will consider nursing and associated care for patients with an increased variety of specific disease processes. You will utilise your bioscience learning to extend your knowledge base of the pathophysiological processes taking place in the patient. Your ability to prescribe and undertake a variety of nursing interventions to contribute to clinical care of patients will be enhanced. Nursing skills will be developed in the clinical laboratories using skill demonstration and simulated clinical practice. The course will require you to critically reflect on your clinical practice and use of current research to provide a rationale for your nursing practice.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for the BP032 Bachelor of Nursing Program in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Australia, Registered Nurse Standards for Practice:

- Discuss acute and chronic alterations in health from a pathophysiological perspective;
- Employ health assessment and nursing management in the planning and care of chronically and acutely ill patients;
- Develop nursing knowledge and skills to be able to care for a patient with an acute illness;
- Relate the pathophysiology of specific disease states to the manifestations of signs and symptoms;
- Describe the nursing management of specific disease states commonly encountered in healthcare;
- Recognise nursing support needs of the patient and significant others throughout acute episodes of care;
- Demonstrate (by means of simulated practice) the application of requisite nursing knowledge and skills for the acutely ill patient.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course will use a range of learning activities including online lectures, discussions and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will be able to work independently and in groups to aid development of your theoretical knowledge and its application to clinical practice.
Learning activities may include modalities such as lectures, lectorials, discussion board forums and practice laboratories.
Lectures: Recorded lectures and lecture notes are the principal mode of content delivery and will present you with the key concepts and information relevant to the understanding of nursing the acutely ill patient.
Self-Directed Learning: Self-directed learning activities associated with this course are designed to enable you to better develop independent learning skills to support your commitment to lifelong learning as a nursing professional and a university graduate. The self-directed learning activities will also support your knowledge of the material covered in the formal learning program and enhance the consolidation and application of that knowledge.
RMIT have state of the art simulated learning facilities for student learning and practice. You will participate in simulated practice within these facilities in preparation for placement. As part of participation you may be filmed for learning, teaching, reflection and assessment and this is considered an inherent part of our learning and teaching program. Recordings will be maintained in accordance with our assessment, document retention and privacy policies.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
