Course Description
Complex Mental Health, Trauma & Recovery builds on prior study in Mental Health Nursing and Human Development. In this course you will learn about acute and complex mental health presentations including the role of trauma that often underpins these. You will conceptualise mental illness as a chronic disease and learn about the importance of a consumer focussed , recovery based approach to assessment and treatment. Early intervention, risk assessment and the physical healthcare of MH consumers in the mainstream healthcare setting will also be examined.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Evaluate mental health models of care in context of the Victorian legislation related to the Mental Health Act (2014) in providing care to consumers with complex mental health care needs.
- Demonstrate knowledge and interaction skills in dealing effectively and appropriately with consumer complex mental health issues.
- Apply diagnostic tools to conduct comprehensive mental state assessments and risk assessments.
- Justify therapeutic interventions for complex mental health.
- Critically analyse contemporary research to inform knowledge base in caring for consumers with dual diagnosis and comorbidities of complex mental health, substance use and physical health.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
