Course Description
This course develops your language, academic literacy and study skills. It builds on and strengthens your current linguistic skills and helps you to apply them in a range of different academic contexts. You will be taught effective language development strategies in order to develop confidence and achieve success in your studies. The course concentrates on capability development in communication reading, writing, speaking and listening. It also addresses capability in information processing through the study of a variety of texts.

- Use English appropriately and effectively in order to facilitate communication
- Present information with fluency, accuracy and with appropriate pronunciation, intonation and stress
- Analyse the conventions of different forms of academic writing and effectively use written English across a variety of academic genres
- Critically read academic texts and synthesise information into a coherent position, using a recommended citation index, if necessary
Overview of Learning Activities
You will address language and learning issues that impact on your area of study. This will be based on a needs analysis completed by you during class in conjunction with areas identified by program lecturers. You will receive, and produce for yourself, on-going feedback on your skills development. You will apply your language and learning strategies through participation in a range of activities, using key language sub-skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. These learning activities are aligned with the academic language and learning strategies needed to enhance your participation in your study program. As such, a range of learning experiences are planned for this course including: input from the lecturer; student led tutorials; group discussions; consideration of case studies; and internet research. You are encouraged to assess your individual needs and to set your own priorities and goals for the course.
