Course Description
In this course you will examine 3D animation theory and its application in the film, television and games industries. You will further develop your skills to produce effective 3D animation and how to manipulate and combine 3D media applied to character design modelling, texturing and animation. Production management will be a focus of the course, including the time, labour and tools required to produce a 3D animation. Experimentation and peer critique of ideas will be another focus.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course addresses the following program learning outcomes:
- Employ a body of theoretical knowledge of visual systems, narrative structures and navigational forms to communicate animated linear and interactive concepts.
- Utilise technical skills in motion and interaction design, through a range of authoring systems, to visualise, structure and construct effective linear and interactive media outcomes.
- Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making in professional practice or future study.
Upon the successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Examine and discuss 3D animation theory and effective contemporary practice in the film, television and games industries.
- Plan productions considering the time and labour required, and demonstrate a practical working knowledge of production tools and processes.
- Experiment and present 3D animation ideas for peer review.
- Design and develop 3D animation projects from concept to finished work.
- Reflect and comment on your own and others’ work, in terms of the models, platforms and techniques used within industry.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as studios, project work, lectures, tutorials, class discussion, individual and group activities.
Activities will develop to an advanced level, the craft of 3D animation, modelling, rigging, character animation, timing, and movement. You will develop greater critical, conceptual and practical skills appropriate for further expanding your understanding of production skills within the context of 3D animation.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. You will develop your abilities in project development, 3D modelling, lighting, texturing and animation. You will be encouraged to challenge and develop your creative and critical ability through class exercises and individual projects.
