Course Description
In this course you will develop knowledge and skills in the area of visual effects (VFX) and basic compositing. Working with industry standard animation and effects software, you will combine imagery to create believable new time-based environments. The language and history of digital effects and compositing will be explored and you will be encouraged to experiment with new and creative approaches to this rapidly expanding field.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Employ a body of theoretical knowledge of visual systems, narrative structures and navigational forms to communicate animated linear and interactive concepts.
- Utilise technical skills in motion and interaction design, through a range of authoring systems, to visualise, structure and construct effective linear and interactive media outcomes.
- Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making in professional practice or future study.
Upon the successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Examine and discuss the evolution of digital compositing and digital visual effects.
- Critically analyse and discuss the implications of emerging technologies in the visual effects design process.
- Design and develop a range of creative visual effects solutions to design problems.
- Interpret the influence of visual effects in the creation of innovative digital media.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as project work, lectures, tutorials, class discussion, individual and group activities.
The semester will be divided into sections focused on core concepts pertaining to visual effects. Each section will be devoted to the development of particular skills and creative abilities. Assignments will be given which relate to the skills and knowledge gained in each particular area of visual effects.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources that are relevant to the focus of your own learning.
There are services available to support your learning, including the University Library and Study Support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. You will develop your abilities in project development, 3D animation, lighting, texturing, rendering and compositing. You will be encouraged to challenge and develop your creative and critical ability through class exercises and individual projects.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment Task 1: Progressive exercises (30%)
Learning outcomes: 1, 2
Assessment Task 2: Presentation (20%)
