It is assumed that students taking this course will have background knowledge in their chosen discipline at Bachelor’s degree level.
Course Description
ONPS2313 Honours Science 1 and ONPS2314 Honours Science 2 courses cover a range of advanced topics designed to extend the knowledge and skills gained from undergraduate courses and prepare you for a future career in research. Some topics are presented as lectures and seminars, whilst others are self-learning based. You should select appropriate topics for study following academic advice from your project supervisor and your discipline honours coordinator.
Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark for the course will be one of the course marks used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. On completion of the course you should be able to:
- Demonstrate an advanced understanding of selected theory, technical and/or practical topics in specialised areas of your discipline
- Demonstrate broad knowledge of topics within your discipline
- Solve problems and apply your knowledge within your discipline
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities will be discipline-specific
Physics Discipline
a. Complete Advanced Statistical Mechanics and Advanced Quantum Mechanics modules offered as lecture courses
OR
b. Complete 2 minor dissertations demonstrating advanced and broad knowledge and the application of knowledge in your discipline, that cover topics not available as advanced theory units. These topics may be complementary to, but must not be too similar to, your research project
OR
c. Complete some other advanced course (e.g. a postgraduate course), to provide depth of knowledge in your discipline selected with agreement of the Discipline Honours Coordinator and Program Coordinator.
Applied Chemistry and Environmental Science (ACES) and Biosciences and Food Technology (BFT) Disciplines
Complete two of three available assessments demonstrating advanced and broad knowledge and the application of knowledge in your discipline.
- A commercial report in the general subdiscipline corresponding to your research project.
- A dissertation under the guidance of a topic adviser. The topic may be complementary to, but must not be too similar to, your research project.
- A poster presentation and annotated bibliography on a topic not too similar to your research project, but may be complementary.
OR
Complete some other advanced course (e.g. a postgraduate course), to provide depth of knowledge in your discipline selected with agreement of the Discipline Honours Coordinator and Program Coordinator, where the assessment is determined by the course guide of that course.
Applied Mathematics and Statistics Discipline
Complete an advanced course in Mathematics or Statistics chosen from the ACE Network offerings of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute. This course should be chosen to provide depth of knowledge in your discipline and should be selected with agreement of the Discipline Honours Coordinator and Program Coordinator. The assessment is determined by the course guide of that course.
OR
Complete some other advanced course (e.g. a postgraduate course), to provide depth of knowledge in your discipline selected with agreement of the Discipline Honours Coordinator and Program Coordinator, where the assessment is determined by the course guide of that course.

Overview of Assessment
Note: students completing coursework outside the following framework (Masters courses or other coursework as approved by the Discipline Hons Coordinator) should complete the assessments specified in the corresponding course guide. In the case of students doing another chosen course, their assessments will address the CLOs in the corresponding Course Guide.
Physics Discipline
For the first option (Advanced Statistical Mechanics and Advanced Quantum Mechanics modules), the assessment consists of a written test (Advanced Statistical Mechanics) and an oral examination (Advanced Quantum Mechanics), each worth 50%
For the second option, the assessment consists of two dissertations worth 50% each.
For the third option, the assessment is determined by the course guide of the chosen advanced course.
(In each option, the assessments together address CLOs 1, 2, and 3.)
ACES and BFT Disciplines
Must complete 2 of 3 options listed below.
One dissertation worth 50%.
One commercial report worth 50%
One poster presentation worth 50%
(Together, the two assessments address CLOs 1, 2, and 3.)
Mathematics and Statistics Discipline
Complete the assessments specified in the AMSI ACE Network course guide or in the course guide of the advanced course that has been approved.
