Course Description
This course provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge of advanced surveying techniques such as using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), terrestrial based equipment, equipment calibration and basic geodetic computations for high precision surveying.
The course builds on the knowledge acquired in GEOM 2091 Surveying 3 with regards to using terrestrial measurements and appropriate formulae to perform geodetic computations. The course has a particular focus on the knowledge and skills required to effectively use advanced surveying equipment in high precision surveying.
If you are enrolled in this course as a component of your Bachelor Honours Program, your overall mark will contribute to the calculation of the weighted average mark (WAM).
See the WAM information web page for more information.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes in BH116 Bachelor of Applied Science (Surveying) (Honours)
2.1 Apply standard and advanced techniques to solve a range of measurement and data management problems.
2.2 Proficiently perform survey computations in two and three dimensions.
2.3 Be proficient in the recording, storage, management and reporting of spatial information.
3.1 Design and implement creative solutions to complex problems in survey measurement and land development
3.2 Interpret and critically analyse results and make informed judgements on the appropriateness of solutions.
3.3 Apply critical and analytical skills in a scientific and professional manner.
4.1 Communicate effectively by means of oral, written and graphical presentations to peers and a wider audience.
6.3 Professionally manage and use information.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the concept and principles of positioning using advanced GNSS technologies, in particular the theory and practicals related to high accuracy and real-time positioning applications
- Conduct high precision surveys using advanced surveying equipment and apply the appropriate field methodology, equipment and processing techniques for specific survey requirements
- Use a range of techniques for managing survey errors and biases including results verification and quality control
- Select and use appropriate formulae to perform geodetic computations, assess the quality of positioning results and apply appropriate adjustment techniques to acquire the best solutions
- Explain the relationships between global and local reference frames used in fixing terrestrial position
Overview of Learning Activities
This course is presented as a series of lectorials, lab sessions, and field practicals. The labs and practicals are designed; to apply the knowledge gained in the lectorials, developing a deeper understanding of the material explored in the lectorials, and to develop practical skills in the use of scientific GNSS technology. You will also complete assignments which will further your knowledge and skills relating to the lectorial topics.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course.
There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.
