Course Description

The course provides an introduction to the concepts of work place health and safety, and the historical influence on the perception of risk.

  • The course provides a basic understanding of work place risk management.
  • Risk is discussed within a context involving people, tasks, equipment, the environment and the organisation.
  • Models of injury and ill health causation are explored.
  • The course explores systematic risk management processes of hazard identification, evaluation and control in order to manage the risk of damage, injury and/or disease
  • OHS management systems and their effectiveness are introduced.

 

 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

In this course you will develop the following Program Learning Outcomes:

  • Determine and apply knowledge of complex occupational health and safety theory, principles and best practice to applied projects to contribute to the profession and discipline of occupational health and safety  
  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on developments in occupational health and safety in both local and international contexts to extend and challenge knowledge and effective practice  

 


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Explain the concepts of OHS, risks and hazards
  2. Critically analyse safety reporting, incident investigations and accident causation theory
  3. Identify and evaluate health and safety information
  4. Interpret the differences between OHS management systems, safety system effectiveness and systems-thinking
  5. Critically discuss ethical issues and implications for OHS workplace practice

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion,individual and group activities.

Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment consists of:

Assessment 1: Group Incident Investigation Report (50%) CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO5

Assessment 2: Individual Safety Management System Effectiveness Written Assignment (20%) CLO1, CLO4

Assessment 3: Individual OHS Report & Presentation (30%) CLO1, CLO4, CLO5
