Course Description
This course introduces you to scientific methods and practices, ethics, communication and presentation skills, information retrieval and application, and applies them through enquiry-based learning of topics and issues within the area of Biomedical Science.
The course will support you in developing core skills for your future university studies as well as facilitate the transition from previous study to the RMIT learning environment.
You will work on independent and group assignments throughout the semester. This course includes a Work Integrated Learning experience. This experience is provided through a project which will take you through the stages of research design, data collection, data analysis and project conclusions. You will be required to communicate the findings of your project in both written and verbal formats.

This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes for Biomedical Science (BP231)
- Demonstrate a coherent understanding of biomedical science (PLO 1)
- Critically analyse and solve scientific problems (PLO 3)

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Identify the skills and opportunities available through the study of biomedical science
- Locate, retrieve, review and cite academic resources relevant in the field of biomedical sciences
- Plan, conduct and present a group research project based on the principles of scientific inquiry
- Demonstrate skills in Information literacy and numeracy including statistics
- Communicate professionally in both written and verbal formats
- Work effectively in teams
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
