Course Description
This course is an introduction to the practice, theories and principles of digital and hand visual literacy of design communication.
Design Sketching
You will explore the techniques used to produce form and narrative in sketching. Emphasis is given to learning and understanding how various visual elements combine together on a page to communicate the intended message as a creative professional. You will discribe 3 dimensional forms on a 2 dimensional surface with dynamic and expresses lie work.
Digital Documentation
The principles and practices of digital documentation will also be introduced and critically reviewed. Computer Aided Furniture Design introduces the use of 2 dimensional technical drawing and 3 dimensional modelling software programs to design practice.
Its emphasis is on the use of these software programs to refine design propositions and to encourage creativity in the use of the software commands and functions in producing design documentation.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) of the AD007 Associate Degree in Design (Furniture Design):
6. Articulate and transmit design ideas and details through a variety of methods and technologies to be able to present design outcomes for others to understand and engage with.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Construct objects in 3D space using drawing conventions both manually and digitally.
2. Create a sense of proportion, depth, composition, contrast and visual balance in drawing, creative sketching and digital or virtual models.
3. Use freehand sketching skills to communicate ideas and concepts in 3 dimensions on a 2 dimensional surface.
4. Effectively use Computers and CAD software to communicate basic design outcome technical information for others to understand and use.
5. Creatively use software to manipulate design information to produce innovative outcomes
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities:
The majority of learning will be undertaken through applying techniques and methods to set tasks to produce drawings and 3 dimensional digital models of furniture components and details.
Exploring, practicing and applying learnt techniques to develop design documentation methods and outputs to clearly communicate design intent and ideas generation
Overview of Learning Resources
A list of recommended learning resources will be provided including books, references and web sources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning. Student learning resources also include access to computer laboratories and relevant software.
Online learning tools and content
As a student in this program, you can access online learning tools and resources for your program and associated courses from the RMIT student website.
https://www.rmit.edu.au/students
RMIT will provide you with specific course materials for learning through our online system (Canvas). The course and workshop notes are posted on Canvas.
