Course Description
This capstone course will prepare you for your transition into professional practice as a Registered Nurse. You will explore the many facets of working within a contemporary health care organisation. Using a systems theory approach, you will consider clinical governance, and health organisations. You will consider the notion of risk management and quality improvement as applied to nursing practice. Workplace issues such as change, conflict management, self-care in relation to stress and responsibilities associated with delegation will also be addressed. You will be required to integrate your prior and concurrent nursing knowledge, skills and their application to transition-to-practice
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for the Bachelor of Nursing Program BP032 in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Australia, Registered Nurse Standards for Practice:

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Identify the requirements to be met for entry into the professional practice role, including knowledge of the documentation required to support the graduate application process.
- Review the processes and structures that support the role of the Graduate Nurse in transition.
- Predict potential challenges and considerations you may meet as you embrace your career choice, identify relevant management strategies and explain the potential impact of stress, reality shock and burn out on the individual and the team.
- Discuss the notion of the “team” and identify the barriers and facilitators that influence team cohesiveness and performance.
- Elaborate on the role of the nurse in Lifelong Learning, Continuing Quality Improvement and Risk Management.
- Examine the responsibility of the professional nurse to maintain continuing competence throughout their career as a requirement of registration.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course will use a range of learning activities including lectures, tutorial discussions and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will be able to work both independently and in groups to aid consolidation of your theoretical knowledge and its application to the clinical practice setting.
Learning activities may include modalities such as lectures, tutorials, podcasts and Lectopia/ Echo 306, Blogs and discussion board and group work.
Lectures: Lectures and lecture notes are the principal mode of content delivery and will present you with the key concepts and information relevant to the understanding of research and nursing practice. You will be expected to participate in classroom discussions and to contribute to the learning experiences of your student colleagues.
Assessments are designed to require you to demonstrate a critical analysis of the core principles presented in the course. Assessment completed in the first half of the semester will provide feedback on your progress. Ongoing feedback on your knowledge and application will be provided from peers and academic staff. Feedback to students is provided in a variety of ways including verbal and group feedback. Individual feedback is not always provided in a written format.
RMIT have state of the art simulated learning facilities for student learning and practice. You will participate in simulated practice within these facilities in preparation for placement. As a part of participation you may be filmed for learning, teaching, reflection and assessment and this is considered an inherent part of our learning and teaching program. Recordings will be maintained in accordance with our assessment, document retention and privacy policies.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
