Assumed Knowledge
This course is oriented towards students training for industries of care and wellbeing, advocacy and human services and invole a practical skills component.
Course Description
This course provides an overview of the field of Alcohol and Other Drugs, the nature of what it means to be a client, and the complex needs associated with interventions. The course takes a socio-cultural perspective and draws heavily upon a practice/experiential base. This course is well suited to those students enrolled in programs oriented to human services and social care priorities, as the content of this course is as much focussed on understanding the roles and functions of alcohol and drugs within the socio-cultural and political context, as it is developing introductory skillsets of what it means to work with people who may experience addiction, recovery and various iterations of renewal. In this course, you will also consider notions of self and identity in relation to discourses of wellbeing, health, illness, dependence and complex needs.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course will provide you with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate the key skills, knowledge and attitude required of workers in the Alcohol and other drugs (AOD) sector. Included within this course is a basic introduction to the services and approaches to working with clients with (AOD) issues including comprehensive assessment of client needs, the development of case plans and undertaking referral as required.
Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to:
- Critically analyse how AOD use is contextualised according to policy and practice environments.
- Apply knowledge of contemporary policy and evidence-based therapeutic models to effectively communicate and engage with diverse service users in the AOD sector.
- Interpret, analyse and synthesise a range of information to comprehensively assess a service user’s individual treatment needs.
- Apply practice-based knowledge and skills to work responsibly and ethically in the AOD sector with and for service users presenting with AOD issues.
Overview of Learning Activities
To develop and demonstrate practice-based knowledge and skills you will participate in practical learning activities in simulated industry settings based around case studies and scenarios. These activities are designed to facilitate your achievement of all the course learning outcomes (CLO) and may include role plays, presentations, demonstrations of equipment use and the preparation of documentation. You will work individually and in small groups.
