Assumed Knowledge
Students must have successfully completed a total of 144 credit points (or equivalent credit exemptions) in courses that fulfil the requirements for the MC158 program including two advanced 24 credit point courses; MATH1300 Biostatistics and MEDS2154 Advanced Laboratory Medicine.
Course Description
This course offers students the opportunity to develop competency in the design, conducting, analysis and reporting of a laboratory-based research project. This course will enable students to apply their theory knowledge and skills acquired from the coursework courses in the MC158 program in a research setting. This course involves all students undertaking a laboratory-based project. The laboratory-based projects can be offered at RMIT University or at external institutes depending on availability. Students must make their own daily travel arrangements to the research laboratories and complete a full semester load in their allocated research project.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for MC158 Master of Laboratory Medicine:
- PLO 1. Knowledge capability
- PLO 2. Technical capability
- PLO 3. Professional work practices
- PLO 4. Communication skills
- PLO 5. Reflective Capability
- PLO 6. Research capability
On successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Critically analyse and evaluate the literature published in International journals for the formulation of a sound hypothesis and discussion of research topics.
- Reflect on weekly research progress and utilise effective project management skills to complete the project within the established timeframe.
- Demonstrate competence in performing research techniques and interpreting laboratory data.
- Effectively communicate research findings to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Prepare a thesis in a form suitable for publication
Overview of Learning Activities
The syllabus is covered in a series of online discussion/interactive workshops, computer-based activities and supervisory meetings. This course will enable students to acquire skills in literature research, retrieval and analysis, design and management of a supervised research project and conduct research following established and universally accepted investigative techniques. Students will, in addition, develop competency in oral communication through the preparation and delivery of an oral presentation; and scientific writing through the preparation of a thesis in a form suitable for publication purposes.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
