Course Description
The use of Point of Care Patient Testing is rapidly increasing in the health sector. This course will develop your skills so that you can operate these devices within the Australian regulatory framework.
This course will provide you with the foundation knowledge and practical skills to undertake diagnostic tests using point of care devices to assist in patient management.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BP147 Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine):
- PLO1. Knowledge capability (of point of care testing devices, their application and reliability in different settings);
- PLO2. Technical capability (in the ability to apply a range of diagnostic methodologies relevant to Point of Care Testing); and
- PLO3. Professional work practices (by contributing to professional work settings through responsible, self-managed, and independent work).

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Safely and appropriately collect a range of biological samples including, blood, saliva, breath and urine for analysis.
- Interact with simulated role-play patients with due regard to their personal safety, comfort and wellbeing and consideration of cultural, ethnic and personal privacy issues.
- Critically evaluate and select analytical devices for use in s point of care setting
- Accurately perform test procedures using a variety of analytical devices.
- Extensively validate POCT methods to determine their fitness for purpose and acceptability with consideration of the total testing process and quality framework.
- Interpret the clinical significance of test results.
- Discuss the role and desirable attributes of a point of care coordinator in a tertiary hospital setting.
Overview of Learning Activities
A variety of activities during the course will involve online materials, and practical sessions including an industry supported workshop.
The theory component of this course is on-line with self-directed study. The practical component of this course is in the form of an industry supported workshop. This course requires an average of five hours a week.
