Course Description
Knowledge of the technology of buildings is an integral part of the decision making process for those in positions of responsibility in the construction industry.
The specific aim of this course is to introduce you to the Standards Australia house and the materials and technologies associated with their construction, have the ability to design simple timber and steel beams, and an introduction to overall procurement practices. The structural design of components will be aligned with residential housing.
This course forms part of the technology component of the program.
This course will aid you as a graduate to deliver professional expertise to a construction project providing high quality outcomes.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- PLO1: Determine and apply knowledge of complex construction management theory to your professional practice and/or further study
- PLO2: Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse construction management stakeholders
- PLO3: Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues
- PLO5: Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- CLO1: Describe the details of forms of construction and building components generally associated with residential buildings;
- CLO2: Calculate member sizes for economical construction in timber and steel
- CLO3: Analyse and apply construction sequencing to residential buildings
- CLO4: Analyse and apply the National Construction Code and Australian standards to residential buildings
- CLO5: Utilise construction management technologies to formulate and communicate construction design solutions for residential buildings
Overview of Learning Activities
Students will gain an appreciation and understanding of basic structures to residential construction setting up basic knowledge for later semesters. Students learning experiences will be gained through lectures and tutorials. A lab visit is envisaged but to be confirmed.

- Victorian Timber Framing Manual which will be used extensively. This can be accessed electronically through the RMIT library site as well.
- Australian Standards, which can be accessed via the web through the ’e - journals’ via RMIT Library web site.
- A pdf copy of the appropriate Acts and Regulations can be obtained through the Building Commission website.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment Tasks
Task 1: Group assignment: Report. Building material assessment. 25% weighting. CLO 1, CLO 4, CLO 5.
Task 2: Group assignment: Presentation. Building material assessment. 15% weighting. CLO 1, CLO 4, CLO 5.
Task 3: Individual quiz: Structures assessment. 20% weighting. CLO1, CLO3.
Task 4: Individual exam: Structures assessment. 40% weighting. CLO2, CLO3, CLO4.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
