Course Description
This course provides you with knowledge and skills of the major areas of administrative law. You will examine the history and structure of government in Australia, subordinate legislation, legal restraints on the use of governmental power and the roles of the Victorian and Commonwealth Ombudsmen.
You will analyse the grounds and methods to review government decisions and access government information.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Research the history and structure of government in Australia and Victoria including the Australian and Victorian constitutions and outline the nature of subordinate legislation and parliamentary supervision of it.
- Apply the principles of judicial review of administrative decisions and available remedies for successful challenges.
- Identify the nature of merits review of administrative decisions
- Apply the law relating to obtaining reasons for administrative decisions and access to documents held by Federal and State agencies.
- Analyse the roles of the Victorian and Commonwealth Ombudsman. in relation to the investigation of complaints.

These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.
