Course Description
Writers and editors need to possess a diverse range of digital skills for creating content effectively, both text and image. In this course you will explore the elements and principles of good design and learn to manipulate text and graphics to create appealing and effective documents and publications. This course covers the essential skills expected of industry professionals and introduces you to industry-standard platforms.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program Learning Outcomes
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- identify and employ writing and editing techniques; principles and practice of communication and writing for different audiences; emerging digital media and trends and developments in the publishing industry
- acquire and apply the skills to write works of fiction and non-fiction, edit to an industry standard, create digital content, design print and web-based products, develop and manage writing and editing projects
- apply and creatively adapt theoretical and technical knowledge and skills to reflect the needs and expectations of varied readerships and markets.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- create design solutions to suit a variety of publications
- perform advanced digital content tasks essential to writers and editors
- identify and analyse the features of a range of industry software platforms
- select and use the appropriate program for a required task
- manipulate text and graphics to create professional standard documents and publications.
Overview of Learning Activities
The learning activities included in this course are:
- lectures and demonstrations, which provide the framework for exploring different kinds of technical content
- class exercises and activities designed to clarify course content and practise relevant skills
- individual project work during which you will develop the practical skills necessary to create designed content for a range of audiences
- independent study, working through the course requirements as presented in classes, online and through learning materials.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Assessment may include a range of activities such as in-class exercises, assignments and individual/group projects.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment Task 1: Digital assignment (20%)
You will format and edit text in digital software using a variety of techniques.

Assessment Task 2: Digital publishing folio (30%)
You will prepare a folio of documents manipulating text and image using digital publishing software.

Assessment Task 3: Publication project (50%)
You will design and layout a publication to output in different formats.
