Course Description

This course will introduce you to the different procurement methods used within the Australian construction industry and internationally. The objectives of this course are to develop the foundational knowledge you will require to undertake construction procurement related activities within the construction industry. Specifically, the course will focus on:
• Traditional Procurement
• Relational strategies (e.g. Design and Build Contrast, PFI, etc.)
• Trust and Partnering
• Emerging concepts such as Sustainable Procurement and Strategic Procurement
• Supply Chain Management and Integration
• E-business / E-commerce


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • PLO1: Determine and apply knowledge of complex project management theory to your professional practice and/or further study
  • PLO2: Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse project management stakeholders
  • PLO3: Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues
  • PLO5: Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives
  • PLO6: Critically examine and reflect on the profession, in local and/or global contexts, and question accepted interpretations and decision making


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. CLO1: Analyse the short and long term benefits of adopting different contractual conditions relating to a range of projects
  2. CLO2: Provide advice on developing partnering contracts among supply chain participants, particularly between client and the main contractor
  3. CLO3: Critically evaluate client objectives and determine the appropriate selection of procurement systems for design and production services.
  4. CLO4: Critically evaluate supply chain relationships and partnering schemes to determine level of efficiency and effectiveness
  5. CLO5: Develop procurement strategies for various stakeholders across a range of projects


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning in this course will involve a combination of Lectures and Tutorials/Workshops. The lectures will develop your theoretical background knowledge of multiple procurement strategies. Tutorials will provide you with learning experiences in which you will be able to apply theory and concepts to a range of authentic, case studies. Extensive use will be made of examples and case study analysis of procurement strategies

In addition, you will be provided with research and professional articles, industry based case studies, and will also be introduced to the guest speakers from the industry.
