Course Description
This course introduces you to the major chronic diseases that are important in Australia. You will study the causes, prevalence and effects of chronic disease on the individual, the community and the healthcare system. Strategies for managing chronic disease will be explored.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for the Associate Degree in Health Sciences:
1. Access up to date discipline information/knowledge and ensure that decisions and actions are informed by a critical assessment of information
2. Analyse and interpret information to determine appropriate solutions to predictable and unpredictable situations.
On completion of this course you should be able to:
1. explain the characteristics of chronic diseases (non-communicable diseases / NCDs);
2. identify the major chronic diseases and risk factors that are significant in the Australian healthcare setting and wider population;
3. analyse and interpret available information on the causes, prevalence and impact of chronic diseases;
4. explore the importance of chronic disease management strategies, including self-management, for the individual, the carer and the community;
5. analyse case studies of chronic disease and communicate the findings using written and oral methods.
Overview of Learning Activities
In this course you will learn through the following activities:
• Face-to-face teaching to develop an understanding of basic concepts needed for further study
• Personal reading (eg online materials) to contextualise and enhance your understanding of the principles and management of Chronic Diseases
• Analysis of relevant information on prevalence and cost of chronic disease in the Australian community
• Group activities including analysing case studies, peer review of reports, case presentation, and discussion
• Simulated workplace exercises: drafting, reviewing and editing briefs; goal-setting; action-reflection
