Course Description
This course will provide you with foundation knowledge to understand and communicate the value of physical activity and its relationship with health. You will also study the management of chronic disease in communities and be able to identify sport and exercise requirements for positive health outcomes in both individuals and communities. You will gain a deeper understanding in the role of urban planning and local government in creating supportive environments for active living communities.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for Associate Degree in Health Sciences:
1. Access up to date discipline information/knowledge and ensure that decisions and actions are informed by a critical assessment of information
On completion of this course you should be able to:
1. Discuss the role of physical activity and lifestyle modification at different stages of life and within various cultural and international contexts
2. Discuss the importance of the positive impact of physical activity and exercise in special populations.
3. Discuss the role of local government in infrastructure, resources and urban planning to enhance physical activity in communities
4. Critically examine evidence on the effectiveness of physical activity interventions and its association with health and burden of disease outcomes.
Overview of Learning Activities
In this course a variety of activities will support your learning such as:
• Lectures &/or workshops (face-to-face &/or online): to cover theoretical concepts for each topic in the course
• Tutorial activities (individually and in teams): to discuss, debate, critique and solidify your ideas and extend your understanding around key concepts for each topic.
• Online discussion and activities: to support and collaborate with other students in your course and debate and discuss ideas
• Utilise and develop critical research and cognitive skills to find credible sources of health information.
• Self directed study time (eg readings or activities around theory): to enhance and strengthen your knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts.
