Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Necessary knowledge of phase diagrams, liquid-to-solid and solid-to-solid phase transformations, and metallurgical processes.
Course Description
Advanced manufacturing technologies are key enablers in modern manufacturing and play an essential role in increasing the efficiency, competitiveness and profitability of the modern manufacturing industry.
This course is designed to expand the knowledge of new manufacturing technologies and their application in the modern manufacturing industry.
This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of specific advanced and emerging manufacturing technologies and their implementation in modern industry within both global and local contexts. The focus is on additive technologies such as Selective Laser Melting, Direct Laser Metal Powder Deposition, Selective Electron Beam Melting, Metal-Wire Based Laser, Plasma and Electron Beam AM processes, Fused Deposition Modelling, Stereolithographyetc.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes:
1. Needs, Context and Systems
- Describe, investigate and analyse complex engineering systems and associated issues (using systems thinking and modelling techniques)
2. Analysis
- Comprehend and apply advanced theory-based understanding of engineering fundamentals and specialist bodies of knowledge in the selected discipline area to predict the effect of engineering activities
After successfully completing this course, you should be able to demonstrate:
- an appropriate degree of competency in the evaluation of various additive and rapid manufacturing technologies and their application in modern manufacturing processes.
- appropriate levels of understanding of the principles of additive manufacturing processes from design to part manufacture and to part qualification, particularly in-so-far as how that understanding can be used in practical applications.
- competency in specification and use of materials, both metallic and non-metallic, in additive manufacturing processes.
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities throughout the course include lectures and tutorials. The lectures will be pre-recorded and will be accessible through Canvas. The key concepts and their applications will be explained and illustrated in in face-to-face tutorials to develop your skills to solve problems. Additionally, the laboratory tour of additive manufacturing equipment and processes at the RMIT Advanced Manufacturing Precinct will give you some hands-on experience within this field.
The course will provide you with the knowledge and understanding of the operating principles of a range of advanced manufacturing technologies and the manufacturing scenarios in which they can be applied.
Overview of Learning Resources
The primary learning resources available for this course include:
- Course materials provided on the CANVAS Learning Management Platform through myRMIT and
- Recommended references distributed through CANVAS
You will also find invaluable information in and through the RMIT Library
