Completion of structural design and analysis courses in a B.Eng program or demonstration of equivalent capability.
Course Description
This course will introduce you to techniques and processes adopted in assessment of existing structures covering structural inspections, estimation of loads, understanding current state of material and structural properties using non-destructive techniques, establishing a limit state for analysis and advanced computational techniques for assessment of structural robustness and resilience. You will be able to apply the key concepts on case studies of structural assessment covering a range of structural forms, materials and techniques.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes.
1) Undertake advanced methods of computational mechanics, analysis, structural optimisation and design
2) Identify, diagnose and treat complex problems in relation to whole-of-life reliability and resilient performance during occupancy
Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Undertake the basic theories of finite element analysis and know how to use Strand 7 for the deformation and stress analysis for the truss and frame structure.
- Develop a finite element analysis program for truss and frame structure.
- Identify the limit state for assessment appropriate to a given scenario and corresponding load factors and capacity reduction factors.
- Understand challenges of working with a high variability of the data and methods and techniques available for reliability based assessment of structures.
- Select an appropriate numerical technique for assessment of structures, based on material, configuration and exposure condition. Identify tools required for the analysis.
- Analyse structures covering common structural forms to ascertain residual capacity using reliability based approach.
Overview of Learning Activities
There will be 24 hours lectures and 12 hours tutorial. The lectures and tutorials will be jointly running within 3 continuous hours.
There will be no final exam. The learning capabilities will be accessed through 3 assignments and 1 major project.
