Course Description

This course is one of a series of method courses designed to develop your knowledge and skills to teach in specialist disciplines in secondary school settings.

In this course, you will learn, practice and then be assessed on your capacity to:

Plan a lesson sequence that demonstrates your knowledge of curriculum, assessment and reporting, as well as your capacity to organise content and use a range of teaching strategies. You will also use your verbal and non-verbal communication skills to teach your peers how to use an ICT resource, to engage students in their learning, and then reflect on your own learning as a result.

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

● Critically analyse and apply educational research to your professional practice, demonstrating inclusive, learner-focused, evidence-based teaching.

● Consolidate and synthesise expert content and pedagogical knowledge and judgement to develop highly effective and innovative teaching skills in an area of specialisation.

● Communicate and engage professionally and ethically with students, colleagues, parents, carers and education stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.

● Show commitment to ongoing professional learning, particularly in relation to meeting the Australian Graduate Standards for Teachers.

Overview of Learning Activities

Your learning in this course will involve a range of face-to- face and online activities including lectures, workshops, practical activities, individual tasks, collaborative group work, discussion and individual reflection. 

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. Suggested readings from current educational literature will be provided on the course website and will be drawn from highly regarded academic journals, books and conferences as well as reports, websites and other online resources. The University Library has extensive resources for teacher education students. The Library has produced a number of subject guides that includes quality online and print resources for your studies. The Library provides guides on academic referencing http://www.rmit.edu.au/library/referencing and subject specialist help via your Liaison Librarians.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

There are 2 assessment tasks:
