Course Description
In this course you will explore leadership responsibilities within early childhood settings and the role of the educational leader as set out in the National Quality Framework. You will investigate management and leadership skills including professional ethics, negotiation and change management, advocacy, quality assurance, and working effectively within the broader community. You will review the role of effective communication as managers and leaders within the field.
This course includes a 15 day work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
For those of you in BP046PEC Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education) this course will help you develop the program level outcome
- Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on educational policy and practice in both local and international contexts.
- Communicate using a range of formats and strategies to audiences within and external to the discipline of education.
- Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.
- Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.
For those of you in BP320PEC Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education) this course will help you develop the program level outcome
- Demonstrate broad and coherent theoretical and technical knowledge in education
- Critically analyse and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment across a range of disciplines, reflecting a graduate level of proficiency in teaching
- Apply initiative, judgement, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills and the capacity to work responsibly, ethically and inclusively in individual and collaborative professional contexts to enhance your practice
- Show commitment to professional learning by being an independent, open-minded, resilient and critically reflective learner, seeking out, learning from constructive feedback and adapting to meet the demands of the profession
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
CLO1: Critically analyse current leadership theories and human resource management strategies impacting early childhood centres
CLO2: Demonstrate a knowledge of policies and procedures for leadership and management in early childhood settings
CLO3: Employ a range of strategies to clearly communicate with stakeholders involved in early childhood education
CLO4: Reflect on your role as an early childhood professional and identify opportunities for further personal and professional development
CLO5: Identify and respond appropriately to legal responsibilities and ethical issues that arise in early childhood settings.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face-to-face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities, readings, critical analysis, reflection, and individual research.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment may include reports, projects and portfolios, compiled individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment Task 1a: Leadership Foundations Module (10%) CLO 1, 3, 4
Assessment Task 1b: Leadership Experiences Audit (40%) CLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Assessment Task 2: Placement Portfolio (50%) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
