Course Description

This course will engage you with sustainability as a cross-curriculum priority identified in the AUSVELS framework. You will explore ways that sustainability can impact on classroom practice and beyond the classroom to impact on the whole school and its contributing community. You will investigate ways that a local environment can be used as a teaching resource and also consider how that local environment connects to wider global contexts and issues. You will develop your skills and knowledge to integrate sustainability across the curriculum and to contribute actively towards developing a whole school culture of sustainability.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain selected sustainability issues with reference to contributing social, economic and environmental factors
  • Consider education for sustainability and environmental education in the context of Victorian primary schools
  • Recognise the complex combination of factors that influence an individual school’s sustainability engagement
  • Apply a range of skills and knowledge to design a unit that integrates sustainability with different disciplines to meet specific curriculum objectives
  • Discuss critically the role of teachers with regard to sustainability in schools.


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Undertake research into contemporary media theory and practice to explore possible career directions
  • Critically reflect on your own work to demonstrate autonomy, good judgment and ethical responsibility
  • Employ appropriate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to solve problems arising from your technical work

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
