Course Description
In this course you will develop skills in design, visual effects and knowledge in the context of visual communication, including animation and motion graphics. You will explore the unique properties of animated effects and their relationship to other creative practices such as image creation. By using a variety of post-production tools to create time-based environments, you will build on your critical thinking, conceptual and production skills. In the course you will use a combination of design objects, sound, animated elements and motion graphics in developing concepts.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program Learning Outcomes:
- Employ a body of theoretical knowledge of visual systems, narrative structures and navigational forms to communicate animated linear and interactive concepts.
- Utilise technical skills in motion and interaction design, through a range of authoring systems, to visualise, structure and construct effective linear and interactive media outcomes.
- Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse contexts within the discipline.
- Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making in professional practice or future study.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Design narrative structures and storytelling to develop original content.
- Present your ideas and concepts to clients and peers, and reflect on feedback to refine and develop concepts.
- Plan and develop small design projects, independently or in project teams.
- Analyse and synthesise how visual effects, animation and motion graphics contribute to sequences.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as studios, project work, tutorials, class discussion, individual and group activities.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources that are relevant to the focus of your own learning.
There are services available to support your learning, including the University Library and Study Support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assignments and workshops will be given which relate to the skills and knowledge gained in each particular aspect of design effects. Learning experiences in this course primarily include studio, tutorials, and individual and group critiques. You will learn through individual inquiry and research, as well as guidance provided in class. In addition to scheduled classes you will need to spend at least twice as many hours as the class’s duration each week working on assignment tasks and consolidating the knowledge, understanding and capabilities gained in class.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
