Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of family law for the legal practitioner. The aim is to introduce law students to aspects of family law legislation and cases. The course will assist students to develop an interest in the family law jurisdiction for possible practice as a lawyer and identify and develop discuss law reform options.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

1. demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of aspects of Family Law in Australia;
2. critically evaluate the Family Law system in Australia and identify areas of reform;
3. analyse and research complex problems relating to Family Law and make reasoned and appropriate choices amongst alternatives;
4. demonstrate sophisticated cognitive and creative skills in approaching legal issues relating to Family Law and generate appropriate responses.

To achieve the objectives listed above this course requires you to participate in various learning activities. These activities generally comprise the following:

• Leading and participating in class discussion on legal problems and policy issues and engaging in roleplays;
• Engaging in legal research by traditional means but also using electronic legal data bases and internet searching.
