You should have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite courses GRAP2645 Advanced Fashion Design Studio 1 or GRAP2459 Fashion Design Studio 7 before you commence this course.

Note it is a condition of enrolment at RMIT that you accept responsibility for ensuring that you have completed the prerequisite/s and agree to concurrently enrol in co-requisite courses before enrolling in a course.

Course Description

Developing an Independent Practice

This studio based course enables you to develop your own brief in collaboration with your studio leaders, building on the experiences in GRAP2645 Advanced Fashion Design Studio 1. You will initiate original fashion design ideas based on your own creative practice, extending on the global context in which your ethos and work is positioned.

This course extends your knowledge and skills and assists you with exploring experimental and innovative concepts with the intent of designing and realising original outcomes and process via a self-directed inquiry. Your research, analytical, evaluative and practical skills are linked to your design development, design processes and final outcomes. This course will apply your ability to evaluate and develop creative solutions, presentations and prototypes for specific design projects at a professional level. Emphasis is placed on exploratory 2D and 3D design, and the development of original ideas and viable concepts.

This course extends the ideas developed in your work integrated learning experience in GRAP2645 Advanced Fashion Design Studio 1, where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

PLO1 Research and creatively solve problems, demonstrating innovation in fashion design, independent expert judgement and ethical responsibility relating to your professional practice in the broader system of fashion

PLO2 Provide design leadership to effectively plan and manage the implementation of new directions and strategies within the global fashion industry, as well as effectively collaborate with others

PLO3 Professionally communicate design and creative propositions, processes and outcomes to address specialist and non-specialist audiences 


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1 Develop an independent design proposal that extends your conceptual, critical and creative thinking, and addresses relevant issues within fashion

CLO2 Produce imaginative and innovative fashion design concepts that are realised into a high quality, original and professional body of work

CLO3 Resolve complex decisions related to the technical, creative and cultural aspects of fashion design

CLO 4 Apply knowledge of the global context of the fashion system and analyse how this impacts on your own practice.


Overview of Learning Activities

Individual project based learning is supported by engagement with studio leaders and peers combined with developing an independently initiated brief realised in studio and workshop sessions. You will further develop and conduct your own design inquiry, which may involve working with other disciplines or working with industry partners as well as working independently.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

Your projects will require you to use the Fashion Design Workshop, and you may have access to specialised workshop resources across the University. You have access to specialised industry software and other digital technologies.

Technical reference books, trade publications and magazines will be recommended as required and as specified by lecturers for individual project areas.

The University Library has extensive resources for Fashion and Textiles students. The library has produced a number of subject guides that includes quality online and print resources for your studies Fashion and Textiles Library Guides

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Your major design project will be reviewed as a work in progress according to aims outlined in your project proposal at a mid-semester critique and through a series of peer reviews and feedback sessions. Your major project will be assessed by a panel, which includes industry practitioners and academics. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
