Course Description

This course increases your capacity to work in a health care environment by developing your knowledge of the Australian health care system and your knowledge of the principles of safe and high-quality health care and health care provision and improvement. The course is designed to enhance your knowledge of the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health. You will also develop your knowledge of ethical principles, reasoning and the principles of professionalism. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to capability development in the following BH102 Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) program learning outcomes:

  • Demonstrate professional behaviour and accountability.
  • Demonstrate social responsibility to improve healthcare.
  • Communicate effectively for the delivery of patient-centred care.

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes BP032 Bachelor of Nursing in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Australia, Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016):

  • Thinks critically and analyses nursing practice (PLO 1)
  • Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships (PLO 2)
  • Comprehensively conducts assessments (PLO 4)
  • Provides safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice (PLO 6)


Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Describe principles of professionalism in health care practice;
  2. Outline the organisation of the Australian health care system;
  3. Compare and explain the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health;
  4. Describe, compare and explain health status across local and global populations with special reference to disadvantaged groups;
  5. Explain principles of health care improvement;
  6. Rationalise ethically sound decisions incorporating principles of ethical reasoning and codes of conduct;
  7. Communicate relevant information clearly and appropriately.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
