Course Description

This course introduces you to the theoretical and practical aspects of commonly used project management methodologies and at the implementation of these methodologies in a health promotion or health administration context.

The course explores some of the challenges and limitations associated with managing projects within a health promotion or health administration context  and also provides you with knowledge and practical experience in the implementation of these project management techniques.

Throughout the course you study all aspects of the life of the project from the initial scoping with the various stakeholders, to the ongoing tracking of the progress of health promotion or health administration project, final hand over of the completed project and the evaluation of the project.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for the AD019 Associate Degree in Health Sciences:

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. articulate and apply terminology correctly to conventional project management methodologies.
  2. apply project management methodologies to a health promotion or health administration context.
  3. develop and present a project proposal and present a project plan that includes a clearly defined scope, timeline and required resources. 
  4. implement, plan and organise resources, timelines, priorities and project scope.
  5. identify potential risks or threats to the project and devise a strategy to effectively manage these risks.
  6. implement project management methodologies into health promotion or health administration projects.
  7. communicate orally and in writing using appropriate technology.
  8. work effectively in a team.


Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you will create your own health-related projects in teams to experience the project management life cycle first hand. You will be required to propose a health-related project and follow through with planning, initiating, negotiating, implementing, monitoring, finalising and evaluating the project. You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course Site.

All lecture material will be available online and you will be required to access this on a regular basis to prepare for lectures and tutorials.
You will be required to access and explore relevant websites, journals, government reports, and other resources. There will also be prescribed and recommended text books that you should read in readiness for weekly lectures, tutorials and workshops.

To pass this course you must achieve a minimum grade of 50%. Assessment marks will be added together across all submitted assessments and your final total mark must be equal to, or greater than 50%.
