Course Description
This course introduces you to the basic concepts of human biology. You will acquire the knowledge necessary to understand the structural and functional organisation of the human body.
Key topics include: Organisation of the human body, structure and functions of cells and tissues, cellular transport, basic metabolic processes, process of cell division related to growth and reproduction, human inheritance and an overview of the major body systems.
Laboratory sessions include: Anatomical and physiological lab activities that provide a better understanding of the biological principles of the human body.
The information covered in this course provides the knowledge essential for Human Biology 2.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) of the AD012P24 Associate Degree in Applied Science and AD019P24 Associate Degree in Health Science.
On completion of this course you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic biological principles related to human body.
2. Use appropriate terminology to effectively communicate information related to Anatomy and Physiology.
3. Explain the structure and functions of organs and organ systems of the human body.
4. Work cooperatively with others in lab activities related to human biology
Overview of Learning Activities
In this course you will learn through the following activities:
- Face to face teaching: to obtain an understanding of basic biological concepts that are required to enhance further education and a career in the field of health science.
- Personal reading (e.g. prescribed sections of textbooks and relevant articles): to reinforce/strengthen your understanding of the principles and applications of human biology.
- Simulation, virtual lab, videos: to understand the key biological concepts of human biology.
- Laboratory exercises to deepen your understanding through practical experience.
Overview of Learning Resources
You will need to access this course on CANVAS (the RMIT online student learning system) on a regular basis to prepare for lectures and tutorials. You will need to read some sections of recommended textbooks, laboratory instructions, and may be referred to other resources available in the RMIT Library, such as videos and subject guide at
http://rmit.libguides.com/sb.php?subject_id=67926
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester and feedback will be given on assessment tasks.
