LAW2538 Introduction to Legal Method

Course Description

This course aims to provide you with detailed knowledge of tort law. You will explore and examine various civil wrongs (torts) that adversely affect the rights of individuals and use problem solving skills to determine the remedies available.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

 

CLO1: Explain the nature of a tort and outline how it differs from contract and criminal law.

 

CLO2: Identify the elements of negligence and possible defences to a negligence claim and apply these to a hypothetical fact situation.

 

CLO3: Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of the torts of defamation, trespass and nuisance.

 

CLO4: Determine appropriate remedies and evaluate how damages are assessed.

 

CLO5: Demonstrate professional writing skills appropriate to the role of a paralegal.

Overview of Learning Activities

Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities. It is structured as a Lecture/Workshop methodology that provides an overview of the core knowledge required, and a guide to further reading and application of that knowledge, including the use of relevant quantitative techniques and associated computer software to inform responsive, evidence-based decision-making. Workshop sessions provide an opportunity for the investigation of relevant business problems and practical applications, including lecturer-designed exercises and discussion questions.
