Course Description
This course introduces you to the concept of creative practice research, and to strategies used in fashion and textile practice research. For fashion and textile design, creative practice is a model of research that uses design experiments as ‘data’ in the form of garments, textiles, publications, films, performances, and exhibitions. As ‘data’ this will be reflected and analysed to be translated as research.
This course is taught alongside your studio course and will enable you to gain a deeper understanding of your emerging design practice and how it is positioned within social and cultural contexts. You will explore a range of creative practice research methods through tutorials, workshops, and seminars. You will develop research skills in data gathering, reflective practice, analysis, and communication of research findings appropriate to fashion and textiles design.
Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. See the WAM information web page for more information.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

PLO 3: Acquire and apply advanced and critical design strategies and thinking to address global and contemporary concerns of textile practice.
PLO 8: Undertake research into contemporary textile design practice and theory to explore future industry and career directions.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
CLO1: Identify, analyse and evaluate different creative practice research methods
CLO2: Critically reflect on examples of creative practice research strategies in relationship to your emerging textiles design practice.
CLO3: Conceptually map your emerging textiles design practice within the context of industry, community, and contemporary textile design
CLO4: Propose a creative practice research intention
Overview of Learning Activities
Your learning will be facilitated via a range of blended online and on campus activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities promote your ability to explore design, investigate, analyse and understand your emerging textiles practice.
