Course Description

Extending TESOL is an elective course that focuses on introducing concepts and pedagogical approaches relevant to second language teaching and learning. This course provides the theoretical background and suggests practical application for teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Second language acquisition research and TESOL teaching techniques are explored for constructing programs and resources appropriate for English as additional language or dialect (EAL/D) learners’ unique needs.This course will assist you to cater for English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) learners in a mainstream classroom context, as a specialist TESOL teacher, or to teach English overseas.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
LO1: Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development of teaching English as an additional language
LO2: Apply initiative and judgement to create a TESOL resource informed by your knowledge of TESOL teaching methodology
LO3: Plan a unit of work for TESOL informed by second language acquisition theories and research
This course will complement the learning outcomes you are developing in your program.

You will be involved in learning that involves a range of activities including workshops, class discussions, academic readings, group activities and individual research.

You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the learning outcomes of the course.

There will be two assessment tasks:

AT1: A TESOL Resource (50%) addressing learning outcomes; LO1, LO2

AT2: A TESOL Topic Investigation (50%) addressing learning outcomes; LO1, LO3

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
