Course Description

This course will provide you with an understanding of the Australian health care system, including public and private, community health care programs, support services and not for profit services. You will gain an understanding of how health care is funded in Australia and explore the trends, challenges and major factors impacting and expected to impact the Australian health system. You will become familiar with health referral pathways, health records and confidentiality and knowledge in developing partnerships in health. You will develop an understanding of different health professionals, and their roles and responsibilities within the continuum of care and the role of multidisciplinary health care.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the following program learning outcomes:

  1. Communicate effectively in a range of forms (written, oral) and with diverse audiences and cultural groups (community, clients and health professionals)
  2. Manage and develop your own work and lead and manage others within a health or community context
  3. Apply ethical practices and be committed to the ethical and professional standards in health
  4. Apply the knowledge and skills of your study stream in community or health care settings


At the completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Describe the scope of disciplines and range of roles and responsibilities of health professionals within the Australia health system and their integration in public health and patient care models, including the referral pathways
  2. Identify the major trends and challenges that are currently affecting Australia, and the major contributing factors responsible for the burden of disease rates
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the basics in health literacy and basic clinical terminology.
  4. Gain an understanding of the various health sectors including: private v. public; indigenous; ehealth; aged care and mental health
  5. Outline clearly the multidisciplinary approaches targeted at the ageing population and the difficulties facing the health care system
  6. Identify the range of accessible services and networks within community health and primary health care environments

  • Lectures and/or workshops (face-to-face and/or online): to cover theoretical concepts for each topic in the course
  • Tutorial activities (individually and in teams): to discuss, debate, critique and solidify your ideas and extend your understanding around key concepts for each topic.
  • Self-directed study time (e.g. readings or activities around theory): to enhance and strengthen your knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts.
