Course Description
This course aims to provide you with an introductory overview of human development across a life-span. Definitions and characteristics of human development, including intellectual, physical, social and emotional growth and development will be covered. You will study theories of child and adolescent cognitive, social and motor development. You will explore characteristics of learners in different developmental stages and consider the associated implications for planning and implementation of developmentally appropriate learning opportunities. A range of differentiated learning opportunities will be explored in order to modify activities to cater for a diverse range of skill levels, backgrounds and abilities. Healthy eating behaviours and nutritional principles related to health and wellbeing will also be examined.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
For those of you in BP041P15, this course will help you develop the program level outcomes:

- Develop content knowledge and how to teach it
For those of you in BP319, this course will help you develop the program level outcomes:
- Consolidate and synthesise expert content and pedagogical content knowledge and apply evidence-based high-impact teaching strategies in professional practice
- Analyse and evaluate student-centred learning approaches to plan effectively for differentiation in Health, Physical Education and Sport
- Apply initiative, curiosity, creativity, judgement, critical thinking and problem solving skills and demonstrate the capacity to work responsibly, both individually and collaboratively, to address challenges in local and global contexts
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Differentiate between developmental stages of childhood and adolescence and discuss implications for teaching health, physical education and sport in an educational setting.
- Describe theories of child and adolescent cognitive, social and motor development.
- Examine how health and wellbeing may be influenced across a lifespan by the conditions into which people are born, grow, live, work and age.
- Describe energy and nutrition requirements for healthy eating, living and performance.
- Describe the social, cultural and political factors that act as enablers or barriers to healthy eating and wellbeing.
- Investigate and critique healthy eating behaviours in relation to national dietary guidelines
