Course Description

This course will introduce you to the not-for-profit (NFP) sector (also known as the charitable, social or third sector, distinguishing it from the for-profit private and government sectors). You will develop your critical understanding of the features and practices which define the NFP sector,  and reflect upon the important role strategic asset management plays in optimising the social and financial value of NFP assets. The objectives of this course are to develop your critical understandings of: the purpose, diversity and value of NFP organisations; the role land and buildings play in NFP organisations achieving the organisational mission; and the maintenance, asset management and capital replacement challenges faced by NFP organisations.  


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Analyse the relationship between a NFP organisation’s social mission and the role of land and buildings in achieving that mission
  2. Critically reflect upon the social missions’ of non-profit organisations and analyse the management and governance challenges presented by the need for asset maintenance, renewal, disposal or redevelopment.
  3. Formulate and apply timely and strategic responses to the asset management challenges facing NFP organisations to ensure organisational objectives are optimised.


In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes.

As a graduate of this program you will be able to;

  1. Determine and apply advanced knowledge of complex property theory to inform decision making in the local and global professional arena, demonstrating expert judgement and ethical decision making in your professional practice and discipline.
  2. Professionally communicate property strategy, processes, propositions and/or decision making across the property and related sectors, leading and negotiating effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  3. Provide strategic advice to implement new directions within your professional field, responding to new and emerging industry trends and issues.

Analyse and apply social, legal, economic and environmental policy frameworks to inform and justify decision making and provide strategic, evidenced-based advice as a property professional.
